Think of this: impoverished families (earning from $1-$2 per day) world-wide cannot afford medical help. With a Water Pasteurization Indicator, or WAPI, they can prevent water-borne diseases. Fewer children will die. You can help people stay healthy with this very simple measuring device.
Pasteurization means heating water to no more than 161 degrees, the same as for milk. A great deal of research has been conducted to show that e-coli and many other pathogens are killed at this temperature when exposed for 15 seconds. And the tests show that boiling is an expensive and unnecessary effort to avoid many diseases.
WAPI’s are made of damage proof acrylic tubing with a plug of wax inside. The water heat sensor in the WAPI shows the user the water is safe. A specifically formulated soy-wax plug senses the water is at 161 degrees and slides to the bottom of the tube! Once this happens, simply take the pot from the heat and pour the water from the pot. This capability means a great deal to people who have limited fuel and no thermostats.
So how much does this life saving device cost? They are manufactured with volunteer labor and discounted materials for about $2 each.
You can join us at Friends of the Carpenter to help make WAPIs and to help save the lives of men, women and children all over the world.
